Landfill mining is a remediation technique for Municipal Solid Waste dumpsites, which are an inherent feature of each city of note, in developing countries. These dumpsites, more often than not, nothing more than a piece of land where all of the city’s refuse is collected, are threats to the environment and consume valuable land, which could otherwise be converted into a revenue-generating asset.

The purpose of a landfill is to bury the trash in such a way that it will be isolated from groundwater, will be kept dry and will not be in contact with air. Under these conditions, trash will not decompose much. A landfill is not like a compost pile, where the purpose is to bury trash in such a way that it will decompose quickly.
Ghazipur landfill is hazardous for the environment. Along with this landfill, there are other two major landfills: Okhla and Bhalswa that have crossed their limit of waste capacity, and yet, the authorities have not taken serious measures to tackle the problem.
