There are a lot of sushi restaurants in Japan, each with its own regional characteristics that make it unique. To explore these regional differences, we conducted a survey asking Japanese people, “Which region has the best sushi in Japan?” Use this information to guide your sushi adventures when you visit Japan.

Respondents’ Feedback:

■Hokkaido

 – Hokkaido sushi offers a unique taste that is unmatched by other regions. It has a wealth of fresh seafood, especially the uni (sea urchin) and ikura (salmon roe), which are top-notch.

 – Sushi in Hokkaido is always fresh and delicious. Both locals and tourists are satisfied with the seafood’s flavor.

 – The abundance of fresh seafood in Hokkaido makes its sushi outstanding. Every time I visit, I make sure to indulge in it.

 

■Ishikawa

 – Sushi in Ishikawa, particularly in Kanazawa, uses seafood from local markets, making it extremely fresh. Winter yellowtail is especially delicious.

 – Ishikawa sushi offers fresh seafood all year round. Kanazawa’s sushi is particularly known for its freshness and taste.

 – The sushi in Kanazawa is renowned for its freshness. Facing the Sea of Japan, it always has a supply of fresh sushi ingredients.

 

■Toyama

 – Sushi made with white shrimp and firefly squid from Toyama Bay is a unique delicacy you can only enjoy here.

 – Toyama’s sushi features an abundance of fresh seafood, particularly the white shrimp, which is incredibly tasty. Using locally caught seafood ensures the flavors are exceptional.

 – The sushi in Toyama is always fresh and delicious. The springtime firefly squid is a special treat loved by many.

 

■Tokyo

 – Tokyo’s Edomae sushi uses fresh ingredients from all over the country, showcasing the craftsmanship of top-notch chefs. It’s a must-visit for tourists.

 – Centered around the newly opened Toyosu Market, Tokyo has many places to enjoy fresh seafood. You’ll never have trouble finding good sushi in Tokyo.

 – The great sushi restaurants in Tokyo are always bustling with customers. The high standard makes it hard to choose just one.

 

■Shizuoka

 – Shizuoka is proud of its seafood from Suruga Bay. Sushi made with sakura shrimp and shirasu is particularly delicious and a local specialty.

 – I visited Numazu in Shizuoka for sightseeing, and the sushi there was truly delightful. I can’t wait to go back.

 – Being by the sea, Shizuoka offers an abundance of seafood such as tuna, sakura shrimp, shirasu, and alfonsino.
