When drivers park their cars or trucks right next to a crosswalk line, the visibility of other vehicles approaching the crosswalk is reduced. As it is, drivers are more likely to hit people walking or cycling since they have less time to see an approaching person.

For the betterment of everyone, California Governor Gavin Newsom signed House Bill 413. This law will prohibit stopping or parking a vehicle within 20 feet (6 meters) of any marked or unmarked crosswalk, which will increase visibility and help reduce potentially fatal collisions.

It is undoubtedly a measure that aims to make roads, especially intersections, safer for pedestrians, cyclists and all drivers in general. However, citations for those who violate this Act will be issued beginning January 1, 2025. Until then, only warnings will be issued.

While this new law is a welcome change that should make California roads safer for everyone, it is necessary to remember that many other, and perhaps more important, factors lead to tragic accidents:

  • Distraction of pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.
  • Driving at excessive speed. It accounts for approximately 28% of fatal accidents in California.
  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It accounts for approximately 27% of fatal accidents in California.
